Modern Slavery

Cora + Spink’s stance on modern slavery globally and the UK.

We take pride in our small, independent business and how we can be part of every process to bring a backpack from drawing board to your back. But this doesn’t mean we don’t take the consequences of modern slavery seriously. Here’s an outline of how C+S protects it’s supply chain from modern slavery.

Modern Slavery, Human Rights & Supply Chain Due Diligence Policy

Doing things properly.

At Cora + Spink, we believe knowing who makes our products matters.

We are committed to conducting our business ethically, responsibly and transparently. That means respecting the people we employ, the people who make our products and the businesses we choose to work with.

We have zero tolerance for modern slavery, forced or bonded labour, human trafficking, child labour or the exploitation of workers anywhere within our business or supply chain.

We’re a relatively small business, and we think that can be an advantage. Our supply chain isn’t a vast network of anonymous factories, sourcing agents and subcontractors. We deliberately work with a small number of suppliers and build direct, long-term relationships with them.

That gives us a much clearer understanding of where our products come from, who makes them and how they are made.

Our supply chain.

Our principal bag production takes place in Kolkata, India, through a small, independently owned manufacturing partner employing approximately 10 people.

We work directly with the business. There is no sourcing agent sitting between Cora + Spink and the factory, and our relationship isn’t simply a purchase order passed through a chain of intermediaries.

Cora + Spink’s director manages the relationship directly and has developed a long-term working relationship with the Indian team. We work together on product development, materials, sampling, production planning, quality and the day-to-day realities of making our products.

That relationship gives us something we value enormously: visibility.

We know who we are buying from. We know where our bags are being made. We know the people responsible for making them. And if we have a question or concern, we can pick up the phone and speak directly to the people involved.

Our approach to due diligence.

Our principal manufacturing partner does not currently hold independent social-compliance certification. We think it is important to be completely transparent about that.

It is a small manufacturing business with a team of approximately 10 people. Our approach to due diligence is therefore based primarily on direct oversight, a long-standing relationship with the business, regular communication and our ongoing knowledge of the facility and its working practices rather than relying on a certificate or annual questionnaire.

For us, due diligence isn’t something we want to do once and file away. It is part of an ongoing relationship.

We maintain direct communication with our production partners, discuss how and where our products are being made and address questions or concerns as they arise. As our business and supply chain develop, we will continue to review whether additional checks, documentation or independent assessment would be appropriate.

We will not knowingly work with any business using forced labour, bonded labour, child labour, trafficked labour or other forms of modern slavery.

What we expect from the people we work with.

Every supplier and production partner working with Cora + Spink is expected to operate lawfully and to treat the people working within their business fairly and with dignity.

Our expectations include:

  • No forced, bonded, trafficked or involuntary labour.
  • No child labour.
  • No recruitment practices designed to place workers into debt or dependency.
  • No withholding of identity documents or unreasonable restriction of a worker’s freedom of movement.
  • Compliance with applicable laws relating to wages, working hours and employment.
  • Safe and appropriate working conditions.
  • No discrimination, harassment, intimidation, violence or abusive treatment.
  • Respect for workers’ dignity and fundamental human rights.

These aren’t optional extras. They are basic standards we expect from businesses that want to work with Cora + Spink.

Long-term relationships matter.

One of the most important parts of our approach is something quite simple: we want to work with people for a long time.

We don’t routinely move production between factories to chase marginal reductions in manufacturing cost. Instead, we prefer to develop stable relationships where both businesses get to know one another, understand expectations and can plan and develop together.

Our understanding of our principal manufacturing partner therefore isn’t based on a questionnaire completed when we first met. It has developed through continued direct contact, product development, problem solving and the everyday process of making things together.

We believe there is real value in that.

PETA-Approved Vegan.

Cora + Spink is a PETA-Approved Vegan brand.

Being vegan has been a fundamental part of the way we design and manufacture our products for years. Our bags and accessories are made without animal-derived materials covered by the certification, and our PETA-Approved Vegan status provides independent recognition of that commitment.

Our vegan requirements are communicated directly to our manufacturing partners and form part of our material selection and product-development process.

For us, responsible manufacturing isn’t one single certification or policy. It is about making conscious decisions about materials, understanding where our products come from and maintaining relationships with the people responsible for making them.

Our UK team.

The same principles apply at home.

Within our UK business we are committed to fair employment, appropriate working conditions and treating everyone who works with Cora + Spink with dignity and respect.

We comply with UK employment legislation and are committed to providing a safe and positive working environment.

How we choose other suppliers and business partners is influenced by the same thinking. Wherever practical, we like working directly with independently owned businesses where there is a genuine relationship between the people involved rather than an anonymous transaction.

What is modern slavery?

Modern slavery describes situations in which someone is exploited for their labour or services and cannot freely leave because of force, threats, coercion, deception, debt, abuse of power or another form of control.

It includes forced labour, human trafficking, slavery, servitude and debt bondage.

These risks can exist in almost any industry or country, but complex international supply chains can make exploitation particularly difficult to see. Textile, garment and accessories manufacturing is no exception.

That is one of the reasons we place so much importance on keeping our own supply chain understandable and maintaining direct relationships wherever possible.

Debt bondage.

Debt bondage, sometimes called bonded labour, occurs when someone is required to work to repay a debt and is unable to freely leave that employment.

It can arise where workers are charged excessive recruitment, travel, accommodation or other fees and become indebted to an employer, recruiter or intermediary.

Cora + Spink does not accept bonded labour within our supply chain. Workers should never have to pay for the right to work, surrender control of their identity documents or become trapped in employment because of a debt created through their recruitment.

If something isn’t right.

Relationships matter, but so does accountability.

If we become aware of information suggesting modern slavery, forced labour, child labour, unsafe working practices or another serious human-rights concern within our supply chain, we will investigate it.

Where possible, we would want to understand the circumstances and work directly with the business concerned to put things right. Walking away immediately can sometimes simply move a problem somewhere else rather than solve it.

However, where a serious issue cannot or will not be addressed, we reserve the right to suspend or end the relationship.

Keeping this under review.

Cora + Spink is a growing business and our responsibilities grow with us.

We will continue to review our supply chain, the way we assess our production partners and the standards we expect from the businesses we work with. Where the size, complexity or risk profile of our supply chain changes, we will consider whether additional due-diligence measures or independent assessment are needed.

This policy will be reviewed periodically and updated as our business and supply chain develop.
