A truly picturesque market town on the River Dart, Totnes is a gem among many beautiful towns and villages in the glorious county of Devon. With the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is popular with walkers who enjoy the many trails in the region.

Running alongside the River Dart is the South Devon Railway, a wonderful historic preserved railway that takes you through some of the most wonderful scenery in the county. The railway and its charming steam trains are not the only attraction, as they have teamed up with Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, Buckfast Butterfly Farm, and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary so you can enjoy a fun day out for all the family.

One of the quirkier attractions is China Blue, which features a variety of independent retailers in one building. Included are a ceramic studio, a lifestyle store, a bespoke cake shop, and even a hair salon. The Kitchen serves a menu that is varied and interesting, including breakfast and brunch, using local produce where possible.

We mentioned Totnes Rare Breeds above, but it’s worth a visit even if you don’t take the stem train. Kids will love the owl displays, plus they have rare breeds of sheep, pigs, and wonderful pygmy goats, and there is a great café on site. The farm holds events so it’s worth checking their website to see what’s on.

For history lovers Totnes Museum is a must. Occupying a glorious, listed building in the centre of the town, it is home to a variety of exhibits relating to Totnes and Devon across the ages, as well as the Totnes Archive which is often used for family research. The garden out the back is designed to reflect the Elizabethan era and is a quiet and relaxing place to take a few minutes to yourself.
